On Saturday, 11 April 2015, Makalu VDC of Sankhuwasabha district was declared as the 17th open defecation free (ODF) and totally immunized VDC amid a grand declaration ceremony.

The ODF campaign which began in December 2014 in the VDC with the facilitation of NEWAH, funding support of WaterAid Nepal and collaboration with the V-WASH CC was able to achieve ODF status within a short span. This was possible after ensuring that all 817 households started using a permanent toilet and all infants below 24 months of age were totally immunized.

The declaration took place in presence of over 600 people including teachers, students, female community volunteers, and local political leaders, representatives of government and non government stakeholders and community members of the VDC.

Chief guest of the ceremony, the programme monitoring officer of Sankhuwasabha District Development Committee, Purushottam Ghimire addressing the mass said, “Makalu, from where you get the view of the pure and pristine mountains and is the centre of tourist attraction holds its own identity. Now this declaration has added one more feature to its identity.”

Further, he also thanked all stakeholders for their support to the campaign and urged them to contribute to its sustainability and achieving the total sanitation targets.
