Pachnali VDC in Doti district of the far western region of Nepal was declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) on 11 June 2011. This was achieved through the facilitation and financial support of the local District Development Committee (DDC), Village Development Committee (VDC), and NEWAH. Pachnali VDC is the second ODF declared VDC of Doti. 649 households within the VDC have now constructed latrines and are using them.
Six months ago, Ghanteswor was declared the first ODF VDC through the support of the Water Resources Management Programme - Helvetas Nepal (WARM-P) and the Rural Village Water Resources Management Project (RVWRMP). The declaration coincided with the National Sanitation week and the celebration was led by the District WASH Coordination Committee (D-WASH CC) and the Village WASH Coordination Committee (V-WASH CC). It saw the participation of district level stakeholders and political leaders from the district and VDC level. NEWAH and WaterAid Nepal (WAN) representatives were handed an appreciation certificate by D-WASH CC for their effort towards the campaign. Shaileswori local FM gave a 2 hour live broadcast of the celebration through their radio station. This declaration has been very encouraging and inspiring to other VDC people and leaders to initiate and target such a declaration in their own VDC.
