Two VDCs, Latamandu VDC of Doti District in the far western region and Solpathana of Sindhuli District in the central region were declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) last week. The declaration of Latamandu took place on 18 and Solpathana on 22 February 2014.
Latamandu has become the 22nd ODF VDC in the district. Nine VDC ODFs were achieved in Doti within a period of 10 months from May 2013 to February 2014, under NEWAH/AusAID programme.
Solpathana is the 11th ODF VDC in Sindhuli. Seven of the 11 VDC ODFs have been facilitated by NEWAH. There are still 42 VDCs that need to be declared ODF before Sindhuli can achieve its ODF target by 2016.
The WASH activities in Latamandu and Solpathana have been supported by AusAID and charity: water respectively. NEWAH facilitated the process of achieving ODF in the VDCs by working closely with the respective Village WASH Coordination Committee and community people.
At present all 1,036 households in Latamandu use an improved toilet. Before, only 10 of 410 households in Solpathana used a toilet, and now 409 of those use improved permanent toilets and one uses a shared toilet.
