On 25 April 2015 a powerful and devastating earthquake of 7.6 on the Richter scale hit different parts of Nepal at 11:56 a.m. The reported death toll from this earthquake has gone above 7,000 and there are over 14,000 injured. And, this figure is still likely to go up.

Out of the 75 districts in the country, 29 districts are affected by this disaster. Homes and villages in these areas have been wiped out and have caused massive destruction to life and property. A large number of people have been left homeless, without food, water and shelter. Although, efforts are being made from different levels to provide support on the ground, immediate relief has not been able to reach all parts of these affected areas due to limited capacity at country level to respond to this kind of emergency, lack of coordination, road blocks caused by landslides, difficult terrain and lack of access to resources etc.

The earthquake has struck some of NEWAH’s working areas in districts like Gorkha, Sindhuli, Chitwan and Makwanpur.

It is a desperate time for the nation and its people. A lot of assistance is required for immediate relief now and rehabilitation/ reconstruction over the long run. We have been offered help by our partners to provide immediate relief and continue work towards recovery and reconstruction of these communities through WASH services. Our staffs are already on the ground to assess the situation and provide relief material available with us.

Hence, at this grave moment of need I would like to make an urgent plea to all our partners, friends and well wishers, in country and out of country to join hands in our effort to reach out to the people most affected by this disaster with any kind of support you can provide.

Thank You

Dr. Pitamber Chhetri
